Mali
Solidagro is active in Mali in the Sahel zone. In the south, the Niger provides fertile valley areas. The north of the country is located in the Sahara. The country has a population of 16 million people, 51% of whom live below the poverty threshold (less than 1.25 $ income per day). In 2013 the country ranked number 176 in the HDI (from 187 countries). The country has no direct access to the sea.
Although Mali was previously known as an example of democracy, a military coup in March 2012 led the country into a major political instability that continues to this day.
Solidagro has been active in Mali since 2002. Since 2005, Solidagro has been working with WaterAid/Mali through mutual local partners to improve the drinking water infrastructure and to spread best practices in the field of hygiene. The education of members of the water committees responsible for the maintenance and correct use of the water infrastructure is the key to sustainability. The water committees raise awareness among families, at communal gatherings and door-to-door, and involve the children through their schools.
In the same villages, 15 farmer groups are receiving support concerning sustainable agriculture.
